Welcome to the online home of Lawns For You, a family run lawn care company based in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland.

Lawns For You was founded by father and son team, Duncan and Colin Gray. Here’s the idea behind it: Duncan has spent his whole career keeping championship golf courses in perfect condition. If he can do that, he can help you make your lawn great — or keep your bowling green playing true.

A Career on Championship Turf

My name is Duncan Gray, and I’ve been a head greenkeeper on golf courses for more than thirty five years.
I was Head Greenkeeper at Lahinch Golf Club — one of the world’s great links courses, often called “the St Andrews of Ireland” — and went on to manage the Kyle and Carrick portfolio of golf courses in Ayrshire, home to some of Scotland’s finest golfing turf. Over the years my courses have hosted the Open final qualifying, the Home Internationals, and many high-class professional tournaments and pro-ams.
Designing and Building Golf Courses
Maintaining great turf is one thing — I’ve also designed and built golf courses from the ground up, including courses such as Ballumbie Castle in Dundee and Brighouse Bay in south west Scotland, and the upgrading of many established sports facilities. Through the 1990s and 2000s I also designed, built and ran my own golf course here in Dumfries.
There aren’t many lawn problems you can show me that I haven’t already solved on a fairway, a green or a tee.
Bowling Greens and Fine Turf
Alongside golf, I’ve spent decades maintaining bowling greens, sports pitches and public parks throughout Scotland — including preparing the Ayr Northfield bowling green complex for both the ladies’ and men’s World Bowls Championships. For over twenty years I have also run my own turf advisory company, consulting on grass surfaces across a whole range of sports.
That’s the experience behind every article on this site, every product in our shop, and every bowling green I look after today.

Duncan.
Hi Duncan, I built a putting green in my rear garden ( 20years) however, the woman next door erected a 2 mtr fence within 1mtr last year.
I solid tine with a fork at fork width intervals every Autumn and treat with lawn sand in winter.
The green is built on 12″ of gravel under 12 ” of sand with top dressing.
The grass is mixed bent/fescue/poa annua.
Any suggestion of grass type to over seed with to help with shade increases by the fence?
